Fields of Research

From a literary and cultural studies perspective this project critically investigates theories and concepts of mobility. The research interest of the four base projects focuses on the mobility of literary, musical, graphic, typographic and material inscriptions that circulate in collection books (notebooks, albums, folders) and contribute to the emergence of facts, constellations and networks. The four sub-projects look into spaces reaching from a single book page to trans-areal constellations and cover historical spaces from the 13th century up to the present.

So far the following concepts of mobility are of central importance:

  • Textual Mobility: mouvance, concepts of migration of texts as well as forms of literary reception and circulation
  • Medial concepts of mobility: recording/chronicling and distribution, concepts of script and media, velocity, trans-textuality/ extraterritoriality
  • Cultural concepts of mobility: Text cultures of mobility/ immobility, popularity as movability

Positioning the Research within the Mobility Discourse

Through the interdisciplinary exchange in the research platform links, possible connections and fundamental differences emerge concerning questions of localization.  In thinking with Greenblatt we understand cultures as mobile and read the circulating inscriptions in (collection) books as key elements for the constitution of trans-areal communities.
