Climate Mobilities: Migration, Im/mobilities and Mobility Regimes in a Changing Climate

28.04.2022 18:00 - 19:30

Mobility Lecture #12 with Ingrid Boas

The lecture "Climate Mobilities: Migration, im/mobilities and mobility regimes in a changing climate” outlines a climate mobilities lens to the study of climate change and human mobility. It starts by outlining how the concept of mobilities (and related literatures e.g. on translocality) move beyond an exceptionalist understanding of migration generally, and of the nexus between climate change and human mobility in particular. Instead, it seeks to understand how the relation between climate change and mobility is rooted in mobility histories, flows, contexts and understandings. It outlines a collective research agenda developed on the subject, exemplified with examples from Bangladesh, Kenya, Tuvalu and other places. It further reflects on the politics of climate mobilities, discussing how human mobility is becoming governed through dominant climate mobility regimes, and what this implies for those whose mobility is being co-produced by these regimes, including their ways to navigate (or act against) dominant climate mobility regimes.

Ingrid Boas is an associate professor at the Environmental Policy Group of Wageningen University (Faculty of Social Sciences). Since 2007 she has conducted research on the subject of environmental change and human mobility, studied from the angles of governance, discourse and human geography. Her latest research project was on environmental mobility in the digital age, for which she conducted research in Bangladesh and Kenya. Her new research project will be on climate change-related mobility in borderland contexts, funded by the Dutch Research Council, involving research in the Bengal, West African, and Pacific borderlands. She is also a supervisor of numerous master and PhD researchers, and serves as an expert for the Dutch Government, the UN and several NGOs.

The hybrid lecture will take place in person and via Zoom. If you are interested in attending the live event, please register by sending an email to mobilecultures@univie.ac.at (max. 35 guests). The Zoom-link will be hosted here on the day of the lecture.
