Katharina Fackler teaches American literature and culture in the North American Studies Program at the University of Bonn, Germany. Her research explores the intersections between US culture, politics, social justice, and ecology. In her first book, Picturing the Poor: Photography and the Politics of Poverty in the 1960s, she examines the role of social documentary photography in public debates about poverty in the early Cold War era. Currently, she is working on her second book project, which explores the entanglements between imperialism, slavery, and ecology in early American sea writing.
